Over the years, I had to give a large number of speeches on important occasions, and have written many upon request by friends and colleagues. My speeches are usually less than ten minutes long unless the situation demands longer ones.  In writing speeches, I follow the Churchillian axiom: “a good speech should be like a woman’s skirt; long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest.”

Here are some speeches written by me. Some changes could have been made at time of delivery.

Speech on the Republic Day (Dhivehi)

In this speech, given in 1997, I spoke of separating the executive, judicial and legislative powers long before the wave of recent democracy developments lapped the Maldives’ shores. It was the first time that such a revolutionary speech was given in public (on live television and radio) on this matter. The President who was in the audience, while speaking later,  had to address to what I had spoken. Over 25 people telephoned me congratulating me for what they called my conviction and courage.  Some, including the President’s Office obtained a transcript.
